Hypnosis in Psychotherapy:

An Interactive Model

Joseph Barber, Ph.D.

November 4-6, 2005

This intermediate to advanced workshop is intended for the psychotherapist who has at least some experience in the use of hypnotic interventions and who is interested in expanding his or her use of hypnotic methods in psychotherapy.

Using hypnotic methods appropriately can make us more effective clinicians by accessing the compelling imagination of the individual seeking our help. We will explore ways the psychotherapist can increase the effectiveness of treatment—sometimes quite dramatically—through the appropriate integration of hypnosis and suggestion into psychotherapy.

Through discussion, group experience, and exploration with workshop participants, we will see how a respectful, naturalistic, and penetrating inclusion of hypnotic methods in the therapeutic interaction can serve to directly affect symptoms, to illuminate psychological processes that are often not consciously or easily accessed, and to effect positive change in the therapeutic relationship. Each of these methods can be used to accelerate the process of psychotherapy.

Joseph Barber has practiced and taught at the intersection of health psychology and clinical hypnosis as well as the integration of naturalistic hypnotic interventions into the psychotherapy process for many years.    He has published widely in the field and some of his best know works are in the areas of managing pain, including the classic work Psychological Approaches to the Management of Painand his more recent edition -Hypnosis and Suggestion in the Treatment of Pain: A Clinical Guide.
